We Choose the Moon is one of the finalists in the 2010 Kelly Awards for Outstanding Magazine Ads and I do have to say that it is intriguing. Maybe the most intriguing out of all of the finalists — this is the one ad that actually made me want to follow through and do as the ad suggests. I went to the site for the 40th Anniversary of the moon landing, which also another great design — you should check it out — wechoosethemoon.org.

Went to this photography exhibit opening last night, and it rocked my world. It was called “Moments Like This Never Last” and the photographer is Wyatt Neumann. He chose to document the everyday life experiences he had so that he could remember the color, warmth, and people he shares his life with. The exhibit was touching, funny, badass and, above all, inspirational. I haven’t been taking as many pictures as I used to and I’m not sure why. I guess I feel like my life hasn’t been all too interesting lately, but sometimes I guess you need to remember that often the good stuff is the sum of a lot of little moments that pass by quickly and if you don’t stop to smell the roses (or take a shot to remember) then you’re not really living life. Right?

There is an amazing Flickr group out there called Looking Into the Past that contains hundreds of photos like these, in various forms, comparing a present photo of a location with a past photo of the exact same spot. I am a total sucker for these types of pictures, as living in NYC has made me realize that I am a super nostalgic person.
I love seeing the history of places, and love it even more when the integrity of things are kept roughly intact, with modern changes applied, sort of like the tenement buildings in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Walking the streets there you can feel the history of the immigrants of New York, and that is worth more than any new blue-glass crappy condo with $1 million units they can ever build.

I saw John Murphy at the Brooklyn Flea on the first weekend it was at One Hanson, and ended up in front of his table going through all the art and fawning over the amazing frames for about 20 minutes. I don’t know why, but I didn’t even bother to ask if he actually sold the frames separately at that point–and when I saw on Design*Sponge that he did, I was stoked! They are incredibly awesome, and the pictures on the site don’t even do them any justice compared to the real thing. If I could, I would make a whole wall out of these frames, with or without art in them.

I really, really want the water poster on the wall in this picture. I think it is the perfect piece of art to hang over your desk for those moments where the brain is running and you want something to look at, but don’t feel like letting yourself get distracted by a bunch of little things on a tack board, or pictures of loved ones, or whatever. This is a serious pro-thinking print.
Of course I just spent the last hour or so scouring for this specific print on the internets, and had to quit before my brain exploded or my hand fell off. Needless to say, couldn’t find it. Apparently the artist who took this desk shot is Jim Bastardo, who has some pretty awesome photos on his site for you to check out, but not this one. Bummer.

A happy customer who happens to be a great photographer loved the look of his brand new Storyboard Books so much that he took a series of photos of them, post haste, and emailed them to us on the New Year. They are AWESOME.
His name is Joe Gomez, of the fabulous Nashville, TN and you should check out his stuff at joegomezphoto.com.

I like these mailer lables by tiny bazaar. I always write in treacherous handwriting — “DO NOT BEND” then say a prayer when mailing photos. These are way cooler.

Second week of Project Night, and I feel like although a little scattered, we may have managed to get more done!
2 major successes of the night: Dave’s killer baked mac and cheese, and Nora’s quick-shot blog image photo shoot (thanks Jeffrey!).
Nora is the magic and brains behind Minneapple in the Big Apple, which is a group that brings together Minnesota expats here in the Big City along with promoting the heck out of Minnesota-created cultural goings-ons whether by said expats, or touring musicians, artists, comedians, writers, whatever. Nora does this out of pure love for both the Minneapple and the Big Apple and her events are always a success. Check out her blog–complete with event calendar–here, and one of her several blurbs about her monthly event in Time Out New York here. You can also buy one of those kick-ass T-shirts, designed by our friend Bryan Christianson (of course another Twin City expat artist) here!
other PN successes: preliminary photo shooting of Nora’s Minneapple calling cards, designed by yours truly, more baby-stepping toward Storyboard Book art, mini-card design discussions.

I want to learn how to do this to pictures. It’s done by a process called HDR, or High Dynamic Range, which is “a software technique of taking either one image or a series of images, combining them, and adjusting the contrast ratios to do things that are virtually impossible with a single aperture and shutter speed.”
I think I might have to buy like 3 new softwares, a new camera, a tripod, and possibly after all that, a new husband as this one may disown me for spending our hard-earned government cash on my new hobby.
Anyhow, here is a looong tutorial along with some philosophical discussions about altering digital photos from Stuck In Customs, aka Trey Ratcliff. Check it out if you have several hours to spare, like me. Or if you only have a few minutes, check out this Top 100 set of HDR photos on Flickr. They’re pretty awesome.
