Yesterday I was lucky enough to spend the day on a Brooklyn Homebrew Tour, led by the courageous beer aficionado Joshua Bernstein. I say ‘courageous’ as you’d have to be in order to lead 25 progressively drunker beer nerds throughout the borough of Brooklyn via subway, herding them into apartments to taste the projects of 4 different homebrewers.
It was an awesome time, and the beers were amazing. Here is a general list stolen from Julie, as I was too, uh, distracted to keep track of what was going down: Red Ale, Oatmeal Stout, Pumpkin Ale, a really delicious lemony IPA, Aventinus, Bourbon Vanilla Porter, an uber hoppy snappy IPA, Blond Ale, Rye IPA, California Common.
Best. Idea. Ever.

I would like some of this stuff, please. Unfortunately I don’t have the time or wherewithal to head to the UK this weekend to get any, so someone please find some here in NYC for me, thanks.
Who on earth could say no to Alcoholic Toffee-Flavored Cider? NO ONE.
Apparently, “Brothers Toffee Apple Cider tastes of sweet, alcoholic, bubbling apple cider with melted caramel stirred up inside, described quite correctly by the company as tasting something like “cream soda.” It was originally developed for Halloween, but was so popular the company now bottles it year-round.”
Bring me some.

I think I know what I’m getting my hard-drinking sailor friends down in Baltimore for Christmas!
This design is amazing, and I can only imagine the spiciness of the rum to stand up to it. Put a Beast in your Belly, for sure.

Check out more info on Kraken **94 PROOF** rum here. Their website kinda rules, too.

I am loving this whole “rebirth of cider” thing that is wildly making the rounds on the internets these days. I happily, thirstily, whole-heartedly agree that the time is ripe for the cider to make a re-entry into the American drinking palate.
Now, this has nothing to do with the fact that, as a teenager, my booze of preference for a Friday night was a 6-pack of Cider Jack. Somehow back then I shunned the Silver Bullet everyone else drank and felt myself fancier and high-brow with my cider-drinking sensibilities. But really, that crap was disgusting–intoxicating liquid sour apple Jolly Ranchers, more or less.
But the stuff they’re talking about now? This stuff is GOOD. Great, even. Refined. Dry. Sharp. Much like myself.

Dave and I spent a whole afternoon one day at txikito in Chelsea with the fine people of Farnum Hill Cider throwing back tasting after tasting of all of their types of cider, while snacking on ridiculously delicious Basque snacks–gratis. We talked long (and drunkenly) with the rep for Farnum Hill about the history of cider, and the comeback they are hoping will happen. I won’t bore you with my play by play, but read this great article in Slate about it. Then try a bottle of their Extra Dry. It’s amazing.
Drink up.
