Apparently Roger Snider, a friend of a friend who I by chance had dinner with the other night. Check out these awesome shots. He travels all over the world taking pictures of these incredible big rigs. I want that job.

And lest you think that all the ultra big rigs are Japanese…. here’s a dose of Freedom for ya.

Check out the full website: Ultra Big Rigs of the World – they are awesome.

The teacher in my graphic design class brought up the art of Saul Bass last week when we were discussing coming up with ideas for movie posters, and I have been fairly smitten ever since. I love love love the aesthetic, clean and graphic with enough grit to not feel totally slick and great dynamic color schemes. There’s really something to be said for the ability to covey such a clear message with such a small amount of graphic imagery.
I also had no idea that he was the designer behind so many of todays most iconic logos. Check these out, too:

Art done by lunchbreath, as found on Core77.
(And I admit to being guilty of several of these after initially getting the program, but now LESS so–which I’ll take as a sign that I am growing with my Photoshop! Ahem, though I still do love a drop shadow.)

Kumi Yamashita does amazing work with light and shadow, and I am mesmerized by it. It’s so delicate, but with a huge impact.

There is nothing I like better to give as a gift to kids than books–I was a pretty voracious reader when I was young, and definitely have some books that I still hold pretty dear from those young years. One of the books that I especially love to give is The Complete Adventures of Curious George (which I was able to give my friends daughter Molly for her first birthday this past weekend)–but I may have found a new addition to the gift-giving stable!
Around the World with Mouk is a recently translated version of Marc Boutavants French story. The animation is gorgeous, and the story line is something I would love to instill in every child I know–there is a huge world of adventures out there to have and countries to explore!
It looks like they are making this book into 62 eleven-minute animated episodes, which look amazing and adorable. Check out the trailer and the blurb on Cartoon Brew here. Check out more of Marc Boutavants cartoon art here.

My friend Sarah once gave me this awesome saddle-stitched book for a birthday or some other called Craphound. Subtitled “A Picture Book for Discussion and Activity,” I had never heard of it before, but loved it–it was chock full of Hands, Hearts and Eyes, that issues main focus. It’s perfect for tracing or scanning images and adding them to whatever art you might be working on. Clicking through the blogs over at ReadyMade I came across a post on the hopefully upcoming second edition of CrapHound issue, #4, Clowns, Devils and Bait. Looks like they are looking to Kickstart this newest edition, so if you love free, fair-use images, donate here to keep Crap Hound alive.

I saw John Murphy at the Brooklyn Flea on the first weekend it was at One Hanson, and ended up in front of his table going through all the art and fawning over the amazing frames for about 20 minutes. I don’t know why, but I didn’t even bother to ask if he actually sold the frames separately at that point–and when I saw on Design*Sponge that he did, I was stoked! They are incredibly awesome, and the pictures on the site don’t even do them any justice compared to the real thing. If I could, I would make a whole wall out of these frames, with or without art in them.

One Little Bird Studios is Leanda, an English ex-graphic designer who is now living in sunny Greece awaiting a bundle of joy and about to be married. She makes these really cute little prints (I think?) and is in the midst of setting up an Etsy shop to sell them at, and a blog to keep us all updated on the awesomeness. Her Flickr is up and running with about 20 shots of some great typography-based work, and I know I’ll be checking back!

How Fucking Romantic is a blog done by a loose collection of mostly London-based comic-artists, illustrators and writers where they are posting either an illustration, comic, short story, etc depicting each of the songs off Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs. I like it.

water print!

I really, really want the water poster on the wall in this picture. I think it is the perfect piece of art to hang over your desk for those moments where the brain is running and you want something to look at, but don’t feel like letting yourself get distracted by a bunch of little things on a tack board, or pictures of loved ones, or whatever. This is a serious pro-thinking print.
Of course I just spent the last hour or so scouring for this specific print on the internets, and had to quit before my brain exploded or my hand fell off. Needless to say, couldn’t find it. Apparently the artist who took this desk shot is Jim Bastardo, who has some pretty awesome photos on his site for you to check out, but not this one. Bummer.

whaddayougot?

Well, if you don’t know what you have, rest assured in knowing that this is everything that artist Simon Evans has, right down to the canned food in the cupboard and the ill-fitting denim.
Here is Google Translates’ version of what the linked blog, Caligraffiti, says in Portuguese:
“Every beginning of the year is the same, old papers thrown away, donated clothes forgotten, new year is new life. And as usual, we always make that analysis of what we have, what we have achieved, in short, who we are.
The artist Simon Evans decided to put everything on paper, literally. A poster called I Have Everything (Everything I do) Evans cataloged all his possessions, clothing remnants of the avocado. Here’s the idea that the Capricorn in me loved it.”
.
Come to think of it, I don’t even really WANT to know everything I have. Shudder.

penguins

These penguins are amazing, I have to agree with NOTCOT. Apparently they were part of PUMA’s holiday window displays all around the world (my lack of even window shopping shows my complete ignorance of this…), and NOTCOT became so infatuated with them that PUMA up and mailed them 20 penguins straight to their office. What an awesome Christmas present.

travisty’s beard

There’s a fairly new blog out there involving a bunch of the artists out at DreamWorks in California. The premise is cool: each month there is a theme, and the artists need to create an image of what that theme is in their mind–using any media they choose. Last month’s theme was “What’s in Travisty’s Beard,” and the above awesome art came out of that. Apparently, there is a party in Travisty’s beard. For December it’s “New Year’s Resolution.”
I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with for that!

Awesome stickers for your keyboard by Christopher Monro Delorenzo. I love them, and wonder if me and my secret glances to the keyboard when typing would get used to them. Either way, they rule.

kalani fujimori
I had to steal this from my co-hort here at Ways&Means, mr. ladiesloveoutlaws, Salah Mason.
Kalani does some awesome designs, and I want some tees, bad.
But my favorite thing on his site has to be this custom invitation. This thing rules.

check out his site at kalanifujimori.com.
his tumblr blog is here & his food blog, Kalanipig, here, too.

over&over

I spied this book in my neighborhood coffee shop, Glass Shop, and convinced the owner Francesco to let me borrow it for a couple of days so that I could drool over it in the privacy of my own home. It has solidly landed the #1 spot on my holiday gift wish list–I want it BAD.
Mike Perry (aka MIDWESTISBEST) is the curator/compiler of this so-called “catalog” and the art within is vivid and inspiring. His personal illustrations are killer, too. Check out his blog, and his online catalog of work.
You can buy the book (hint, hint) online through his SuperMarket store HERE.
Gimme.
