almost that time

nakameg

This almost-too-amazing-to-be-real shot is from the streets of Tokyo, in the Nakameguro district, and the Sakura (cherry blossom) trees are in full bloom.  Although I don’t have a plane ticket to Tokyo in my hand, I luckily do live 1.5 blocks away from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden where the cherry blossoms are starting to gear up and will be hitting their stride starting next week.  Somehow last year I neglected to actually get into the Gardens themselves to witness the insanity, but this year it’s number 1 with a bullet on my list of must do’s in April.

1. See the Cherry Blossoms in Botanic Garden

2. Get a job.

At least I’ve got my priorities straight!

(thanks to Kinfolk on Hypebeast for the Sakura shot)

forest of calm

wallpaper bryn6

This wallpaper is so amazing.  Wallpaper is one of the reasons I want to live in someplace that I own, or at least someplace I know for sure that I will be in for a long enough time to invest in some real decor.  This paper is gorgeous and calming and has just enough design to be interesting but isn’t overwhelmingly patterned as to be distracting.  And I LOVE the fact that it is just on the one wall, serving to extend the headboard and really make that wall outstanding.

Check out the incredible before & after makeover of this room on Design*Sponge.  It’s nearly unbelievable that the before could even be the same room!

mouk travels the world

boutavant_lge_11

There is nothing I like better to give as a gift to kids than books–I was a pretty voracious reader when I was young, and definitely have some books that I still hold pretty dear from those young years.  One of the books that I especially love to give is The Complete Adventures of Curious George (which I was able to give my friends daughter Molly for her first birthday this past weekend)–but I may have found a new addition to the gift-giving stable!

Around the World with Mouk is a recently translated version of Marc Boutavants French story.  The animation is gorgeous, and the story line is something I would love to instill in every child I know–there is a huge world of adventures out there to have and countries to explore!

It looks like they are making this book into 62 eleven-minute animated episodes, which look amazing and adorable.  Check out the trailer and the blurb on Cartoon Brew here.  Check out more of Marc Boutavants cartoon art here.

frames of paradise

JM bird of paradise

I saw John Murphy at the Brooklyn Flea on the first weekend it was at One Hanson, and ended up in front of his table going through all the art and fawning over the amazing frames for about 20 minutes.  I don’t know why, but I didn’t even bother to ask if he actually sold the frames separately at that point–and when I saw on Design*Sponge that he did, I was stoked!  They are incredibly awesome, and the pictures on the site don’t even do them any justice compared to the real thing.  If I could, I would make a whole wall out of these frames, with or without art in them.

one little bird

One Little Bird Studios is Leanda, an English ex-graphic designer who is now living in sunny Greece awaiting a bundle of joy and about to be married.  She makes these really cute little prints (I think?) and is in the midst of setting up an Etsy shop to sell them at, and a blog to keep us all updated on the awesomeness.  Her Flickr is up and running with about 20 shots of some great typography-based work, and I know I’ll be checking back!

water print!

officespace5

I really, really want the water poster on the wall in this picture.  I think it is the perfect piece of art to hang over your desk for those moments where the brain is running and you want something to look at, but don’t feel like letting yourself get distracted by a bunch of little things on a tack board, or pictures of loved ones, or whatever.  This is a serious pro-thinking print.

Of course I just spent the last hour or so scouring for this specific print on the internets, and had to quit before my brain exploded or my hand fell off.  Needless to say, couldn’t find it.  Apparently the artist who took this desk shot is Jim Bastardo, who has some pretty awesome photos on his site for you to check out, but not this one.  Bummer.

flea’d

We went to the Brooklyn Flea yesterday to check it out in its new winter digs, the old Williamsburgh Bank Building.  And I am so glad we did!  That building is INCREDIBLE and practically on par with Grand Central station.  Maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but it is truly some beautiful craftsmanship and art.  They don’t make buildings like this anymore.  So Fancy.

And what’s even MORE exciting is that we actually bought something there!  A piece of furniture, even!  It’s an old school desk from the 1940′s, made of pine, with a bench seat on the front and desk attached to the back.  I was drawn to it because my grandparents always had one of these benches in their home to sit on to take your shoes off, and it was the exact same wood.  It’s funny to feel my home aesthetic coming together, however slowly.  I’m much more New England-y than I thought!

penguins

These penguins are amazing, I have to agree with NOTCOT.  Apparently they were part of PUMA’s holiday window displays all around the world (my lack of even window shopping shows my complete ignorance of this…), and NOTCOT became so infatuated with them that PUMA up and mailed them 20 penguins straight to their office.  What an awesome Christmas present.

paper goodness

paperpack_giveaway_crop

Check out Three Potato Four and see all the interesting and well designed collections they have managed to source, from paper packs to typewriters to letterpress wood font sets.  The paper looks so cool, and would be really fun to do a mailing project with, or maybe piece together for some much-needed wall art.

Awesome stickers for your keyboard by Christopher Monro Delorenzo.  I love them, and wonder if me and my secret glances to the keyboard when typing would get used to them.  Either way, they rule.

With the ever weaker dollar exchange rate this bike is a steal at $119,035.75! Husband, looks like I found your Xmas present!  Pretend to act surprised, OK?

I want to learn how to do this to pictures.  It’s done by a process called HDR, or High Dynamic Range, which is “a software technique of taking either one image or a series of images, combining them, and adjusting the contrast ratios to do things that are virtually impossible with a single aperture and shutter speed.”

I think I might have to buy like 3 new softwares, a new camera, a tripod, and possibly after all that, a new husband as this one may disown me for spending our hard-earned government cash on my new hobby.

Anyhow, here is a looong tutorial along with some philosophical discussions about altering digital photos from Stuck In Customs, aka Trey Ratcliff.  Check it out if you have several hours to spare, like me.  Or if you only have a few minutes, check out this Top 100 set of HDR photos on Flickr.  They’re pretty awesome.

when it rains

when it rains it pours

On a sunny day, it’s still pouring.  Though in this case it’s all ideas, all the time.  The good type of rain, not that annoying Seattle drizzle.
